1830-40 English Scenic Rockingham Ten Piece Rococo Dessert Set

$6,500.00

Offered for sale is a magnificent ten piece Rockingham English bone china dessert set, handpainted with topographical interior scenes. The set is decorated with a wide green border embellished with floral vignettes and highlighted heavily in gilt.

Thomas Brameld founded Rockingham China in Yorkshire, England in 1820. The company was supported by the 4th Early Fitzwilliam (Marquis of Rockingham) and produced soft paste bone porcelain of fine quality in a creamy white color. Their wares were elaborately decorated and no expense was spared in the process. The pieces were often painted in the Rococo manner with topographical landscapes and florals stepped up with gilded highlights. Their lavish designs, which became expensive to produce, soon threw the company into bankruptcy and they ceased production in 1842. Rockingham is desirable with collectors both for its rarity and beauty.
