19th C. Oil On Board Still Life With Game by Jean Baptiste Robie

Offered for sale is a 19th century oil on board depicting a floral still life with game (or “Jagdstilleben”) painted by Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Robie (1821 – 1910). The focal point of the painting is a colorful scattering of grapes and leaves with a game bird lying on the ground. A small bird perches nearby on a rock formation while one can pick out trees and a glimpse of blue sky in the background. The painting is stunning with its vividly colored grape vines against a dark background, a trademark of this illustrious painter.

Jean-Baptiste Robie was born in 1821 and spent his formative years in Brussels. He gained recognition for his paintings of Napoleon but will forever be remembered for his incredible floral still life compositions. He traveled extensively throughout his life and won many awards and honors for his work. In the evolution of flower painting he had a pivotal role, developing realism through his meticulous attention to detail and color clarity. He was knighted in 1861 for his contribution to the world of art, and most major museum collections are not complete without an example of his work.

The painting is in excellent condition and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. It is mounted into a more recent custom built frame that complements it beautifully. Two other versions of this painting are in the holdings of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
