Early 19th C. French Miniature Portrait on Ivory of Marquise de Montesson

Early 19th C. French Miniature Portrait on Ivory of Marquise de Montesson

$675.00

A stunning early 19th century French miniature watercolor portrait on Ivory of Charlotte-Jeanne Beraud de la Haye de Riou, Marquise de Montesson. The Marquise became the second legitimate wife of Louis Philippe 1, Duke of Orleans. She was celebrated for her both her beauty and intelligence and performed small plays to the amusement of her husband. She was imprisoned during the Rein of Terror but escaped execution and became a close friend and confidante to Josephine de Beauharnais during the beginning of Napoleon’s Empire.

She was painted by many famous artists including Vigee-Lebrun. This lovely portrait, not signed, depicts her as a younger woman at the height of her beauty. The portrait is in good condition and executed by a skilled artist, however, there is some paint wear along the edge of the portrait, not affecting the figure, from the 8:00 position to the 11:00 position. The portrait is set into a brass frame with a suspension ring.
