Green Cut to Clear Bohemian Glass Vase, Engraved Horse Cameo

Green Cut to Clear Bohemian Glass Vase, Engraved Horse Cameo

This is a stunning 19th century green cut to clear Bohemian glass conical-shaped vase, raised on a faceted stem terminating in a stacked plinth base. The vase has a large Intaglio engraved cameo, which depicts a horse in a pastoral setting. The engraving is possibly signed by the engraver (signature is quite illegible and perhaps not a signature at all.) The vase is attributed to the Bohemian artist and glass maker, Karl Pfohl (1826-1894) who was known for his beautiful engravings of horses through several layers of glass.

Bohemian glass has a long history, but few of their pieces were documented. There were many engravers but only the best were allowed to sign their pieces. Karl Pfohl was one of the most famous of the 19th century Bohemian engravers, and his pieces are now found in museums and private, mostly European, collections.

The vase is in excellent condition and the engraved work is superbly done; a piece for the collector of fine Bohemian engraved glass.
